PLAYGROUND OPEN SOON Merivale mother realises dream with help from community and council ANDREW KING

Gretel Gray, 3, (right) is just one of many children who will get to enjoy the Merivale playground her mother created from scratch. Charlotte Gray was determined to have a playground built at the Merivale Reserve on Rugby St. So she fundraised and lobbied officials to get the playground built. Now, two years later, the playground will open March 19. Ms Gray fundraised about $42,000 with the city council matching that effort dollar for dollar. She wanted a park closer to the area for children. “I needed a place that I could walk down to, burn off a bit of energy and also provide something for my young children,” she said. The opening will have a barbecue, bouncy castle and face painting – also all the plants that will surround the playground will be laid out for the community to install. “We want the locals to bring down a spade and help put the finishing touches on the playground,” Ms Gray said. The new equipment includes a basket swing, merrygo-round and a climbing ladder. “We wouldn’t have been able to do this without the fantastic support of the community and those who put money towards it,” she said. Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board, Fendalton New World, the Canterbury Community Trust, the Rata Foundation and a $10,000 anonymous donation all helped to get her over the fundraising line. Ms Gray said she has her eye on another playground in Wainoni she wants to help get back on its feet. “I will take a small break between this project and my next one . . . I won’t be able to sit still for long,” Ms Gray said. “Even though it is not officially opened yet there have been lots of kids making use of the area.”

Worry over disappearing stream Stagnant water also encourages mosquito breeding

ANDREW KING

A disappearing Fendalton stream is causing more than environmental concerns – the stagnant water could also be responsible for an increase of mosquitoes in the area. Fendalton resident Kristina Pickford’s property straddles the Wai-iti Stream, which she says has slowly dried up since the February 2011 earthquake. Though in 2013, the city council cleared the sediment and liquefaction that saw the stream flow again, by the spring last year it had dried up again. She has asked the FendaltonWaimairi Community Board to look at using an up-stream spring to get the water flowing once more. “There are other cases of flow augmentation projects in the region, namely the Kaputone Creek, Ilam Stream and Paparua

Stream,” she said. She said because of the low flow of the stream, water is pooling in areas close to residential properties creating the perfect environment for mosquitoes. She is not alone in her concerns. About 40 residents signed her petition asking for the diversion to be put in. “Every single person I spoke to said it needs to be addressed. Some have complained about an increase of mosquitoes because of the stagnant water.” According to her neighbours during the 60s, 70s and 80s the

stream used to be teeming with freshwater crayfish and large long fin eels. The board has asked the city council to investigate the issues raised by Ms Pickford regarding the degradation of the stream and find a way to increase the flow of water in it. It requested the report be returned by August 29. “This needs to be a priority . . . a holistic view on streams throughout the city need to be addressed,” said Ms Pickford. Board chairwoman Val Carter said it was concerning the

OPEN: Ministry of Education director of education Coralanne Child (left) and Breens Intermediate student Taylah Maclaughlan-Wing helps Bishopdale Preschool pupil Mitchell Oldfield (middle) cut the ribbon at the opening. COMMUNITY STALWARTS: Bill Sykes (left) and Peggy Kelly enjoy the Packe St Community Garden 20-year celebrations.

Community garden celebrates ANDREW KING

The Packe St Community Garden has celebrated its 20th birthday with cake and a spectacular sample of fruit grown in the garden itself. Cake, singing and of course home-made jams and other goodies were on offer to those who went along to celebrate. The garden was the brainchild of (Botanist) Bill Sykes and

Peggy Kelly in 1995 – and they have been involved right up until today. They pushed the city council to buy the land at 129 Packe St and the community garden was born. They hired Di Lucas, a Christchurch landscape architect, to work with the children around the area on how they wanted the space to be shaped. The two founders are looking

to hand care of the garden onto someone else as they feel the garden is in a good place – also they want to spend a bit more time enjoying retirement. The garden now has a toilet, running water and a new tool shed which was donated. In order for the garden to continue, the Shirley-Papanui Community Board has granted $5200 towards a new coordinator.

Pre-school re-opened The new Bishopdale Preschool is open at Breens Intermediate School. The project was able to go ahead after a massive fundraising effort by the community – they pulled together $825,000 to build the new pre-school. In March 2012 the Bishopdale Community Preschool was evicted from the city council building they had occupied for the previous 40 years due to the building no longer meeting the new building code. In 2013 the pre-school was

told it would not be able to return to the building at the Bishopdale Mall, but fortunately the Breens Intermediate school board and the Ministry of Education agreed to allow the pre-school to build on a section of the school. Said pre-school manager Sarah Straver: “It has been a long and often challenging journey for our community and we are incredibility grateful to everyone that has contributed to making sure this valuable service remains.”

Odd-shaped roundabout helps traffic flow ANDREW KING

A different-shaped roundabout at the intersection of Memorial Ave and Russley Rd will help the flow of traffic while major works are carried out. The elongated rugby ball shaped roundabout is a temporary measure that will give vehicles more time to negotiate the intersection in Burnside. The intersection is part of the wider upgrade of the road, which is a major freight and commuter route between Belfast and the Christchurch Airport, linking to Russley Rd and the southwestern side of the city. Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board member Jamie Gough said he was unaware of the odd-shaped roundabout but praised the project for thinking outside the box. “You have to give credit where credit is due. It is a difficult thing to conduct those level of roadworks and still move traffic though at a reasonable rate,” he said. Cr Gough also said he had received a surprisingly low

amount of complaints about the project. “I thought there would be a lot of people unhappy about the delays but it appears the general public understand what is going on and are patient while it happens,” he said. New Zealand Transport Agency highway manager Colin Knaggs said while the changes will alleviate traffic congestion he urged drivers to be cautious. “We ask motorists to be aware of changes in traffic management, follow on-site signage and drive to the conditions,” he said. The upgrade project is part of the transport agency’s Christ-

VANDALISM INVESTIGATION The Shirley-Papanui Community Board has requested the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design team assess the alleyway access between Hills Rd and Onawe Pl. The investigation comes after a request for assistance to maintain the fence between a resident’s property and the alleyway that has been damaged by repeated vandalism. ROAD CONDITION REPORT The Shirley-Papanui Community Board has asked city council staff to investigate and provide a report on the condition of both Matson and St James Aves taking into account the potential increase in traffic due to the Mitre 10 development. This comes after a resident asked for a deferment of rezoning the Papanui ward to medium density housing due to traffic problems at a recent board meeting. TREE REMOVAL Residents on Tisch Pl, Belfast have successfully lobbied the Shirley-Papanui Community Board for the removal of an elm tree. Belfast resident Julie Brigg spoke to the board regarding the request by residents of Tisch Pl for the removal of a tree. The tree had grown too large for the available space

and two branches had fallen in recent months, one of which blocked the road for five hours before being removed by a city council contractor. The board said the city council arborist and parks unit would remove several unhealthy trees in Tisch Pl, including the overgrown elm which was seen as a safety hazard. Also to be removed is a eucalyptus tree in the adjoining Foley Reserve. MAN HIT BY TRUCK A man was taken to Christchurch Hospital on Thursday with moderate injuries after being struck by a truck in Northwood. St John sent an ambulance to the scene on Groynes Drive around 7am. The man was assessed at the scene and taken to hospital for further treatment. WASTEWATER REPAIRS Work has begun on repairing the earthquake-damaged wastewater lateral pipes in St Albans. The work will be on Sherborne St, between Bealey Ave and Edgeware Rd, and take about a month to complete. At times turning restrictions may be in place for traffic turning onto Sherborne St from Canon St, Purchas St and Bealey Ave. One side of the street will always be open for pedestrian use.

Papanui’s Past

Memorial reserve worth another look MURRAY WILLIAMS, PAPANUI HERITAGE GROUP

In spite of its central location on the corner of Papanui Rd and Horner St, this small space can easily be overlooked. It is one of the suburb’s most modern reserves as development did not start until after the demolition of the War Memorial Hall, the previous occupant of this site. This building was demolished in 1978 because of the perceived risk that it would pose in the event of an earthquake. The commemorative aspect of the reserve was established by mounting the plaque salvaged from the exterior of the memorial hall into a low stone wall. The original foundation stone of the memorial hall has been incorporated on the other side of the wall. The site has a special significance for the local RSA branch and plays an important part in formal ceremonies on Anzac Day. On the north-west corner of the site there is a garden containing 57 roses, supposedly one for each of the names

on the plaque, according to the city council background paper written for Shirley-Papanui Community Board members in April 2003. There is however, something of a mystery in that the plaque honouring Papanui deaths in World War 1 contains only 38 names and the accompanying engraved stainless steel panel commemorating World War 2 fatalities lists 49 names. The World War 1 plaque at St Paul’s lists 36. This is not a park for energetic children, there are four seats but no play equipment, yet this is probably appropriate as the main function is commemorative and contemplative. Another feature is the con-

crete fountain donated by Papanui Rotary in 1983 that hints at the possibility of regeneration after the wastage of war. Rotary also planted a tree to recognise Ern Dale, a local pharmacist who played a major part in promoting community welfare. The reserve is a good place for a break but casual observation would suggest that the area is hardly used, perhaps the incessant and noisy traffic is intrusive. The concrete toilet block is a scruffy structure yet it has recently been redeemed through the effort of Papanui High School art teacher Mark Saltero and some of his students. The mural they have created on the theme of the familiar red poppy has been given a more modern twist in that the repetitive but evolving images have been presented in a style that references Andy Warhol. This feature alone makes the reserve worth a closer look.

Readers respond to last week’s article about the possibility of a fireworks ban in city council parks and reserves S E Adams, Redwood: I would definitely support a ban on all fireworks. It is heartbreaking to see pets traumatised by the noise and running under beds and trying to get into cupboards. Over a period of 40 years we had dogs all of whom were terrified of fireworks and even being sedated didn’t fully help them. I now have a cat and he too is terrified when he hears the noise not only on November 5 but it goes on in my neighbourhood for months after with people letting off fireworks in their gardens. Also why do New Zealanders celebrate Guy Fawkes when it means absolutely nothing to them. Sharon, Les Holdem and Penny the cat Rangiora: We have moved from Christchurch to Rangiora where we lived for more than 50 years of married life and we have always had animals. They all were stressed by fireworks to the extent of having to bring the big dogs inside and comfort them when fireworks were let off. We feel that there should be a total ban on sales of these items and that they should

only be done in controlled public displays – like the New Brighton Pier ones. The latest incident was February 20 at 10.40pm and this made our cat so stressed that we had to wrap her in a blanket and put her in her safe spot which is in the back of the closet. These items (fireworks) are dangerous and there is no need for them to be available to the general public at all and while we think about our pets (cats, dogs etc) what about the wildlife that gets caught up in this stupid ritual as well. Anne Evans, Bryndwr: The noise and disturbance of fireworks to our pets is disturbing. Not only on November 5 but many other nights, quiet nights, when you least expect it, loud bangs come out of the blue. The noise is also disturbing to us people who are settling down to sleep, then it disturbs the person with the added worry of our pets or do we need to get up and attend them. Many nights well after November 5 and December then even in January. I think sale of fireworks should be banned. Now people buy $50 boxes and there are so many fireworks people end up buying two boxes for the price of one which means more trouble for pets and people.

physically stressed by the noise and when people purchase and stockpile them for use at a later date their use is a real nuisance. On Waitangi Day night I was woken by someone from a neighbouring property using fireworks very late which gave me an awful fright. We have enough to contend with in Christchurch with earthquakes waking us and unnerving us. A reader gives her views on the Papanui Parallel Cycleway

Graham Evans, Bryndwr: I am a breeder of canaries which I show and judge. The fireworks disturbs the hens that are sitting on eggs or chicks. Fireworks often scares the hens to leave the nest overnight finishing the cycle. The noise from the bangs is the main cause of concern. Christine Carr, St Albans: I have a dog that is terrified of fireworks, but I don’t object to fireworks in parks, except for the fire risk. I would much rather have fireworks banned for use in private backyards, because the sound is much closer to my home and the dog spends Guy Fawkes night and the evenings

around that date, cowering under the bed, with a very expensive calming collar on and equally expensive diffuser plugged in next to her. Yes she’s a wimp, but she is an old dog and has been a very faithful hearing dog for me over the last 11 years and doesn’t deserve to suffer as she does. The fear also prevents her doing her hearing dog duties which could be dangerous for me. Heather Smith, Redwood: I totally agree that a ban of fireworks in parks and reserves would be a good idea. I think there should be a total ban on the sale of all fireworks to the public in fact. Most pets/animals are

Mary-Ellen Wilson, Casebrook I have already started to use the Rutland St cycleway to get into the city. I cycle from Casebrook and find the cycleway much safer than going down Northcote Rd, with the right-hand turn into Main North Rd, and then down Cranford St. For at least 16 years I commuted into the city along Northcote Rd, Main North Rd, and Cranford St. After the opening of QE II Drive, this became a daily heart in mouth as I tried to get across Northcote Rd into the rightturning lane without being hit by traffic going straight on. So for me the chance to do this cycle route has already improved my way into the city.

Music vital in education Burnside music teacher and worldrenowned singer Ravil Atlas Do kids need music? The very simple and overwhelmingly supported answer is yes! There are numerous studies that support early music education. It improves cognitive, numeric, social, communicative, and emotional skills. In short, it enhances everything we purport to want in education. It is prevalent in every child’s life. It crosses social and ethnic boundaries and binds us as human beings. It supports cross-cultural learning and inter-disciplinary teaching methods. In other words, you can more effectively teach maths, social science, history or any other subject by including it within a music educational framework. To do this, it requires a strong plan supported by the Ministry of Education, understood by school administrations, and given proper training and support for the teachers that deliver the curriculum. In addition to the many docu-

mented benefits, music can be a galvanising force in the culture of a school, a community, and a nation. Although music education should be delivered through the school system (and I hope that we will someday follow the lead of so many other nations) each child should be encouraged and supported in music activities by parents, family, and schools. My comments are informed by my career as a musician, a music educator, and a researcher, but more importantly by my fond memories and understanding of the many benefits given to me through my musical activities and the superb teachers that gave me my musical education. My passion and my opinions come from the viewpoint of a father whose grown children have benefited from a strong musical education through the schools and the hope that his now six-year-old daughter will benefit in the same manner here in New Zealand. Have your say: Do you think there is enough emphasis on music in the school curriculum? Email your thoughts to andrew. king@starmedia.kiwi

Alli Robertson

Singing butcher bows out The Singing Butcher, Redwood resident Alli Robertson has been in the industry for 52 years. He chats to Andrew King about singing at a former customer’s funeral, growing up in a family of 12 and letting down his brother’s car tyres.

TOP MAN: Alli Robertson shows some of the cuts he is capable of and even though he is retired, he still heads down to the shop to cut the odd bit of meat at Peter Timbs.

Hi Alli, tell us what made you become a butcher? My dad told me if I wanted to leave school I had to have a job. So I took off down to the local butchery and asked if they needed a hand. I was told I could start immediately washing up. I took off home to put on some rougher clothes and got stuck into my first job. I was 14. So from there you decided being a butcher would be a good job? Yeah. I took up an apprenticeship they offered me 12 months later. My dad said people will always eat so you have chosen well. To study we had to travel to Wellington on the Wahine to study in Trentham. When I had qualified John Taggat advertised for a butcher in Church Corner, I worked for him for 20 years. He opened in the Church Corner Mall where it still is to this day but he doesn’t own it anymore.

Did you ever want to get out of the industry? No. I was lucky to have bloody good guys around me so it made it easy to stay in the industry. I didn’t think about owning my own butchery because of this. I always went the extra mile. I am proud of my sick day record – six years without a single sick day. What was your motivation behind turning up even when sick? Well my dad said: “What you put in son you get out.” I really enjoyed my job which also helps. Your dad sounds like he had quite an influence on your life, tell me about him? My dad was a tile maker and in the holidays we would help him make them. Then he went to ABC Cables and was a night foreman. He never owned a car and always cycled everywhere. He died just before the

earthquakes started. I had nine siblings and we all got around on the bus. Did anyone in your family have a car? My oldest brother was the first in the family to get a car. But he wouldn’t take us for ride so we let his tyres down (laughing). He wasn’t to pleased about that and neither was my dad. What was your first car? Ford Prefect. Yeah, it was a bomb, a Ferrari, it was a beauty. Tell me about your mum, she must have had her hands full with 10 children? Mum did a lot of sewing and knitting. She cooked and kept us healthy. She was an extraordinary lady. If we ventured out our clothes had to be clean and tidy. She was a hard worker, well she had to be with 10 of us (laughing). The only time she would leave the house was on Thursday at 9am. Mum and dad would head to the milk bar for a cup of tea and a quick look round the shops then back home. Where was home for you growing up? Our family home was in Ballantyne Ave in Upper Riccarton. We were really close to school.

KEEN GARDNER: Now Mr Robertson is retired he is spending a lot more time in the garden, even placing third in a recent garden competition. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

I went to Riccarton Primary then onto Kirkwood Intermediate and finished at Riccarton High School. I heard you sung a bit while working? When you are at work you have to make yourself happy so I used to sing to some of the customers. I sung to a customer, Hazel, and when she passed away the family asked me to speak at the funeral. So

I sung a bit at her funeral. I think it does make you happy and makes everyone around you. Sometimes I put in my own lyrics. There was also a bit of dancing every now and again. How do you find retirement? Have you got out of the habit of waking up early as most butcher do? No, I still rise pretty early. I actually got told off by my

wife about getting up too early the other day. It has always been 4.30am I’m up ready to go. I’m starting to get better though. Tell me a bit about your wife. My wife Kay worked in a bank at Church Corner. She used to drive a little Mini. I used to wait for her until when I was sent with the banking from the butchery. We started talking and one thing led to another, we got married and have two girls Lisa and Kirsty and now we have three grandchildren Mikayla, Braydan and Hollie. I have heard you are a fan of gardening? Yes, I enjoy it because mum did. It is good pottering around outside. I entered in the Redwood competition and finished third. I will concentrate on it more for next year, I’m going to have a real go. Over the 50 years in the industry you must have seen a few changes, did technology help? When all this new stuff came in I shied away from it. I’m a butcher who just needs

a knife and my hands. If I wasn’t sure about something I was never too proud to ask someone. If I wasn’t confident I wouldn’t do it. Any injuries over the years? I nicked myself every now and again but nothing serious, still got all the fingers. Do you miss it? Last week was my first week retired and yeah, I do a bit. If Peter Timbs want me to fill in I will be available. Does Kay like you spending more time at home? She said to me it is nice to have you home. We enjoy each other’s company. We are heading away on a trip up north soon but I’m not a very good driver so it will take me a week to get to Wellington from the Northshore. Finally do you have a favourite cut of meat? I’m not a fancy doer, I like pork sausages and lamb chops. I’m just a good old Kiwi boy who likes Kiwi food. Thanks Alli, I’m sure we will see you singing in the butchery again one day.

The colourful clans of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School descended on Christ’s College for an athletics day last week. Dressed in their finery the students ran fast, jumped high and long competing for points for their clans. The day started with a day girls verse boarders sack race and ended with the staff verse clan leaders and sports council relay. Principal Sandra Hastie ran the final leg for the staff in her first year at the school. “The athletic and swimming sports have been a wonderful opportunity for me to experience first-hand the Rangi spirit which is very evident and real,” she said. “There has been a real sense of carnival atmosphere at these events and it is obvious that the clan spirit is strong

and highly competitive.” The six clans are named after Scottish castles – Balmoral, Braemar, Doune, Dunvegan, Glamis and Stirling. Clans compete for points that accumulate throughout the year and contribute to the Clan Cup that is awarded at the end of the year. The 2015 champions, Braemar, won the title for the first time since 1971 and will be looking to perform well again in 2016. Director of sport at Rangi Ruru Girl’s School Jo Fogarty said the athletics day is a wonderful celebration of noise, colour, clan spirit, outstanding performances, often new school records, and incredible participation. “It’s goosebump stuff,” she DEFENDING CHAMPIONS: Rangi Ruru Girls’ School clan Braemar won the 2015 Clan Cup and were ready to take maximum points on athletics day. said.

HAPPY BAKERS: Selwyn House School pupils in 5L were in for a treat last week with a visit from their teacher’s friend to teach them how to decorate cupcakes. The girls had a lesson about icing and decorating the delicious concoctions. It was practice ahead of the school fair, as the 5L community will be running a cupcake stand. The girls are waiting patiently for their fondant decorations to dry before taking them home to use. Lots of fun and very tasty.

INSPIRATIONAL: Selwyn House year 7 and 8 students were fortunate to have a visit from a very special guest speaker, Abbas Nazari. Mr Nazari was born in Afghanistan and came to New Zealand as a refugee aboard a Norwegian container ship, the MV Tampa who rescued them from a stricken fishing boat, when he was seven years old. His story is very moving and the girls were inspired and totally engaged. He finished his talk at 10am and then the students had thirty minutes of questions but unfortunately he ran out of time before the students ran out of questions.

HAPPY SWIMMERS: Harewood School pupils love their upgraded swimming pool facilities. The upgrade, completed at the end of last year, included new roofed changing shed, storage shed for equipment, shade area and new fencing. The children can now also swim in consistent temperatures thanks to the installation of a heat pump. The upgrades were made possible due to grants from The Lion Foundation, NZ Community Trust, Rata Foundation and Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Trust, with help also from T&D Construction, Placemakers Cranford St, Steel and Tube, Tulloch Group, Christchurch Steel, Christchurch Wrought Iron and Metalwork and the school’s PTA.

Tigers to chase title after 40-year drought ANDREW KING

The Papanui Tigers will chase its first men’s softball title in 40 years while the women’s side will defend its crown this Saturday. The men stormed to a 9-0 victory over the PCU Devils on Saturday then a 7-3 win over Albion on Sunday allowing them to clinch the top of the table and book a place in the three game finals. Papanui finished the roundrobin competition with 63 points, two more than Albion. Men’s coach Colin Sutherland said as one of the larger clubs in the country they have the depth to take the title home. “We are back to full strength with former Black Sox and Australian player Ryan Merriman coming back in the fold,” he said. A taste of authentic Indian food Roger Raizada got into the restaurant business when he moved here from New Delhi. After finding shortcuts were being taken in some ‘authentic’ Indian restaurant meals, he was inspired to launch a range of spice mixes and pastes, which are now sold online and at selected food stores, writes Jan Bilton. Lets talk lips with - Koru Clinic There are generally 3 types of requests for lip fillers at Koru Clinic, clients who want to 1. Boost Lip Volume 2. Minimise smokers lines 3. Define the lip border & reduce lipstick bleed Younger patients tend to go for larger lip volumes, whilst more mature women want a more natural lip augmentation .

T

he features on a person’s face can change or determine how they are perceived, and we are all subconsciously affected by these cues. Every time we see a face, we make judgments on that person’s character and personality, and all this happens instantly and automatically in our brains. Years spent talking, chewing, pouting, smoking or smiling can lead to lines and wrinkles around the lips. Lip fullness can also be an indicator of aging, as time spent biting or pursing the lips can lead to deflated, thin lips over time. Lips are also especially vulnerable to environmental effects, as the skin on the lips is less than a third of the thickness of the skin on the rest of your face. Many women really want to improve

the appearance of their lips but are understandably very scared about looking like a duck, especially after the all too common publicised disasters affecting some unfortunate celebrities. These days we all recognise women are looking for a natural appearance rather than looking like a “Kardashian”. Dermal fillers for the lips are one of the most popular cosmetic medicine treatments available, and are a very quick and easy way to dramatically improve your look. They typically last between 12 – 14 months, and are hyaluronic acid based. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin, meaning the risk of adverse reactions to the procedure is very, very small. Recovery time is usually around 1 day.

“Treadle” for your heart

Methyl B12

While walking is great for a healthy heart, there is another way to exercise which anyone can do, sitting comfortably in front of TV.

Y

ou can boost circulation to help blood back to your heart – without strenuous exercise. An Aircycle can help pump the blood. Working the calf muscles with a “treadle” action, just like the old sewing machines, is the key. The Aircycle “treadle” exercise assists the calf pump mechanism. According to Dr Matthew Parsons, “Anyone on diuretics with the problem of fluid retention and anyone sitting with legs down for any length of time may be helped by using this exerciser.” “My swollen ankles have reduced and I can now sleep without pain,” Alex Simmonds said. “And my night cramps have gone!” “Since using the Aircycle, my diabetic ulcer has healed and all the pain gone. My toes have stopped tingling and getting sore ,” Richard Leighton shared. Aircycle exercises also strengthen leg muscles and relieve arthritic pain. Keeping your legs moving is not just good for your heart. It will help you remain mobile and independent. Aircycles are available in pharmacies. For information and orders, visit the website www.aircycle.co.nz or call 04 569 5013.

Emerging research has shown as many as 50 per cent of older adults and as many as 25 per cent of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12.

12 is essential for energy production, cell health, regulation of mood and sleep cycles, nerve health and repair, and prevention of homocysteine - a serious cardiovascular risk factor that is known to cause damage and plaque in the blood vessels. It can also increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard researchers found a 34 per cent decrease in risk of vision loss in a study of participants aged 40+ who were supplemented with B12. Another study linked a higher risk of hearing loss in subjects in their 60s who were low in B12. The reason so many people lack B12 seems to be due to our body’s inability to absorb it as we age, as the digestive system becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux medication and other drugs further reduce B12 absorption. The good news is B12, in the form of methylcobalamin sublingual tablets that are dissolved in the mouth and thru bypassing the digestive tract, have been shown to effectively raise B12 levels in the body.

EXCESS CANDIDA Do you suffer from any of the following symptoms?

H

eart burn, indigestion, feeling tired often, low energy, gas, constipation or diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, frequent urination, oral thrush (white coated tongue), sore throat, fungal skin infections and rashes, jock itch and chronic disease among others are just some of the common symptoms. A causative factor for all these symptoms and more can be a yeast organism called Candida albicans. It is often underestimated what a profound effect it can have on our health and wellbeing. Around 70 per cent of people have a Candida overgrowth in their intestines, mouths or on their skin. It is normal and beneficial to have some Candida in the gut where it is kept under control by the good gut bacteria or probiotics that feed on this yeast. However, using antibiotics without probiotic supplementation, sickness, poor diet, insufficient stomach acid and medications are some of the factors that can upset this delicate balance and allow the Candida to thrive. The tentacles of Candida can penetrate the intestinal wall overtime, causing inflammation and leaky gut syndrome where toxins and only partly digested proteins can enter the blood stream, often leading to

food intolerances, poor health, allergies and susceptibility to asthma. The Candida yeast often enters the blood stream as a fungus. Symptoms will vary depending on its location in the body. If it enters the brain, it can cause depression, anxiety and foggy thinking. Some researchers believe the Candida fungus can release a pleomorphic microorganism or virus that’s form changes depending on its environment. This is believed to be a factor in cancer and other chronic health conditions. However, it is the body’s weakened immune system and toxic environment that is the real cause of disease. Candida imbalances in the gut can be reversed fairly easily with correct nutritional supplementation and care with the diet and lifestyle. To cleanse Candida fungus and its resultant toxins from the body can require a bit more effort and may take some months. The natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy can provide you with a detailed nutritional protocol to cleanse the excess candida and its fungus from the body, and improve your overall health and wellbeing. Visit them at 110 Seaview Rd, New Brighton. Phone 388 5757. We are always happy to help!

Keep comfortable with

EnviroMaster

A

re you struggling with the heat of Summer or wanting to get organised for Winter? With the ever changing weather patterns, heat pumps have the flexibility of being able to heat and cool which is an advantage no other appliance can offer. This represents great value for your investment as you can use it all year round. The team at Enviro Master Ltd can help keep you cool this Summer either at home or work. Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs. We currently have savings up to $600 off the recommended retail price on selected models. Would you like to maximise the number of days you can use your swimming pool? Heating your pool can do this and one of the most cost effective ways is with a water heat pump. Enviro Master Ltd can supply, install and service you swimming pool heat pump providing you with a comfortable, extended swimming season. Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working

as effectively and efficiently as possible resulting in a healthy, hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump clean. We at Enviro Master, are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period. It is important to remember, when selecting an installer, the manufacturer’s warranty does not cover the installation and consumers could be responsible for any repair or damage caused to the system due to poor installation. Enviro Master’s five-star installation guarantee ensures correct installation, and a demonstration so customers have an understanding on how it will best meet their needs. For a free in home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Rd, Waltham, Christchurch.
